Portillo's LEGENDARY SKI SCHOOL
Portillo's Ski School has been one of the world's finest for over 50
years. The School's excellence continues today under the direction of
Michael Rogan, a year-round ski professional. Four of the School's
directors in the past were Olympic Gold Medal winners. Portillo's
first director was the famous Emile Allais, French Champion of the
1930s. Emile was followed by other greats such as Othmar Schneider,
gold medallist in the 1952 Olympics in Oslo; Stein Eriksen, Olympic
gold medal winner also in 1952; and Pepi Stiegler, a silver medalist
in the games at Squaw Valley, and gold and bronze medal winner in the
Olympic games of Innsbruck.
Among the other great ski school directors, Sigi Grottendorfer stands
out as the man whose bridging influence is still felt today. Having
learned from Othmar, Sigi trained his successors, Hartmut Helmstreit
and Jimmy Ackerson, whose Portillo Ski Schools were a training ground
for current director Michael Rogan.

INTERMEDIATE & ADVANCED SKI CLINICS
Polish your skills or push yourself to the limit with Portillo Ski
Clinics!
The Ski Clinic program was designed by Michael Rogan, a member of the
elite PSIA Demonstration Ski Team and a ski instructional contributor
for SKI magazine. Few know skiing better than Michael.
Portillo's Clinics are coached by some of the world's best ski
professionals. Most instructors teach year-round, and 95 percent of
the ski school staff is certified at their country's highest national
standard. A few are on national ski demo teams. They're also some of
the friendliest people around, and they are eager to show you why they
choose to teach at Portillo year after year.
WHAT ARE PORTILLO'S SKI CLINICS?
The intensive, weeklong clinics are divided into two categories:
intermediate and advanced. The clinics are an ideal way for skiers in
these two categories to improve their skills and walk away feeling
more confident in their ability to ski any kind of terrain. This is
your chance to ski with some of the best trainers and guides in the
world, and enjoy the unique experience of South America's legendary
resort, Portillo.
WE KNOW THAT BETTER TECHNIQUE MEANS MORE FUN ON THE MOUNTAIN.
If you're like most skiers, you might have hit a rut at the
intermediate or advanced level that you seem unable to break out of.
They're there to change that. The top ski professionals will help you
push your limits in powder, racing, steep terrain and chutes, allowing
you to truly enjoy skiing more than you ever have.
WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Portillo's Ski Clinics are for intermediate to advanced skiers 18
years old and above. Classes are taught in English, and groups are
matched according to ability. The group size limit is five skiers per
instructor, however this size can be smaller depending on ability
level of participants.
INTERMEDIATE TO INTERMEDIATE-ADVANCED:
You feel confident on groomed blue terrain and some black. Your skis
are always parallel, and you can vary the size of your turn. You use
your poles and can maintain a consistent rhythm. You are comfortable
in shallower amounts of powder.
ADVANCED TO EXPERT:
You can handle most black groomed terrain, though you might still be
having trouble with bumps and finding confidence in more extreme
off-piste terrain. You are capable of making a range of differently
sized turns (short, medium, long), and can carve a turn. You are
comfortable in powder.

WHY ENROLL IN A CLINIC AT PORTILLO, IN CHILE?
You've heard of summer ski camps in North America and Europe, but here
in South America the seasons are reversed, meaning August is the
middle of winter, with great snow conditions -- not salted slush
lanes. That's why the Austrian and US Olympic downhill ski teams chose
Portillo as their summer training site in 2001 and 2002.
Portillo is steeped in history and is an extraordinarily beautiful
mountain valley that draws skiers and snowboarders from around the
world. This is, after all, where the idea for the World Cup originated
(over pisco sours in the bar), where Jean-Claude Killy won his first
gold medal in 1966, and where the world ski speed record was broken
three times on our vertiginous Kilometro Lanzado. You'll have an
opportunity to view Olympic teams in practice and ski alongside top
skiers. Visitors to Portillo take skiing seriously, but they leave
their ego behind, making for one of the most enjoyable ski experiences
in the world.
